Aquarium Filters – For Freshwater

Aquarium filters provide aquarium with the fresh water as well as marine aquaria. Filter helps to remove physical and soluble chemicals wasted products from aquaria allowing the water to work effectively and properly for the aquatic plants and animals. Moreover, aquarium filters play an important role in maintaining the life cycle of the aquatic animals and also supports them as aquaria are relatively small, closed volumes of water compared to the natural environment of most fish.

There are few specific materials which are especially use for the aquarium filtration. Frequent materials are suitable as aquarium filtration medium. The well known material which is frequently used materials and is suitable for aquarium filtrations are; synthetic wools, known in the aquarium hobby as filter wool, or nylon.

There are different types of aquarium filters.

·         External filters

External filters are simple to be used and are more effective than any other. It allows the water to get removed from the aquarium and then get pushed or pulled through a series of different channels of filtration and then again water is returned to the aquarium.

·         Diatom filters

This filter operates diatomaceous earth to create a particularly fine filter down to 1 µm which removes particulate matter from the water column. They are only used for the cleaning of tanks. They are not constantly controlled on aquariums.

·         Trickle filters

A trickle filter usually comes in two configurations, one is tending to be placed on the top of the aquarium whereas, and other is placed below the aquarium. They are also known as dry filters and they are usually used for marine and freshwater aquariums.

There are few qualities of the better and maintained aquarium filter which specifically involves;

  • It should be quiet
  • It should keep the water surface in motion for oxygen exchange
  • It can easily remove floating crud from the water (mechanical filtration)
  • It should have ability of turning ammonia from fish waste and leftover food into nitrate (biological filtration)
  • T should be able to remove strange odors and chemicals (chemical filtration)
  • It should kill free-floating algae and parasites (sterilization)
  • It can heat the water in a tropical tank — this is not necessary for Goldfish and other coldwater animals

The simple aquarium filtrations are made up of filtered wool and activated carbon. The filter wool traps large debris and particles, and the activated carbon adsorbs smaller contaminations. These should be changed regularly at suitable interval.
